Isaiah 9:6-7

New King James Version

6 For unto us a Child is born,

Unto us a Son is given;

And the government will be upon His shoulder.

And His name will be called,

Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of His government and peace.

There will be no end,

Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,

To order it and establish it with judgment and justice.

From that time forward, even forever.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

The prophet Isaiah is well known for his literary prophetic proses. His writings aren't sharp, curse or rude; even when writing about the grotesque experiences and attributes of fallen mankind.  His writings come across as idealistic, hopeful, and governmental. One gets the sense that Isaiah must have been confident in his call as a scribe, so much to the point, that he stuck to the task of writing to foretell what was on the mind of God. Isaiah believed in what he was doing, and his writings today are still found to be credible.

So, what did Isaiah intend to share through his writings found in Isaiah 9: 6 – 7? Largely, it was about the government of a promised Son which was to come. He would become the ultimate Messiah and that He alone would bear the responsibilities of leadership. He would exact peace, offer reconciliation, provide council, bring equity, and establish judgment. To top this off, the Son would reveal the clear strategy of the Kingdom of God. This Son is who we know to be, Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God the Father.

Leadership is a God-given gift. Leadership is what’s required because we all need direction. It was never God’s intention for us to figure out things on our own. It was never God’s intention for us to derive all the answers. It was never God’s intention for mere mortals such as us to solve the world’s problems. God’s best intention is for us to partner with Him in the matters that He cares about. What does God care about? Simply, to live in right relationship with Him and with others. He says in Romans 13:8, “owe no man anything except love”. This love means that we have a right to live free from each other’s unjust expectations, burdens or desires. Practically, it also means to not take on excesses, thereby becoming enslaved to a system. This love also means, that we should respect authority, don’t try to be familiar with those that God has put in charge to lead over us.

Christ Jesus came to this world as a child to fix our problems. As He grew, He consulted with His Father for the strategy on how best to offer help. He did not take on a complex of His own, to be everywhere and to be all things to all people. After all, He was one man. If Christ Himself, experienced exhaustion, hunger, disappointment, sadness, and to a certain extent loneliness in human form. How much more burdens will you and I face if we try to take on everything; especially by ourselves?  Help is available when we acknowledge and draw on the council of the Holy Spirit. He comes through Jesus Christ to bring us into divine truth. Perhaps on a day, like today, if we draw near to Him, we may hear Him say “be still and know that I am God”, Psalm 46: 10. Shalom.
